The Good Owner … Better Budgeting
There are some interesting parallels that can be examined between predicting the weather and budgeting for a construction project. The closer to the time, the nearer source, and the deeper you investigate ... the better your prediction is likely to be.
Deliberate, pragmatic, eyes-wide-open budgeting can make your project, making your customers happy and to keeping those you are accountable to in your court. Construction, especially today, can be an uncertain dynamic environment. A three-fold strategy to consider might consist of 1) take the necessary steps and time to determine what you really want, 2) research what will it take logistically to get it and 3) calculate what the open market will truly charge.
The Construction Owners Association of America is a volunteer-driven organization that exists to help Owners plan & execute better projects. Sharing best practices and lessons learned is a core value, as evidenced by this article, which was authored by an Owner member of COAA for the sole purpose of helping fellow members.

COAA Connect 2024
The Construction Owners Association of America (COAA) is hosting a single conference this year in Atlanta – November 18-21.
COAA Connect national conferences are the foundation of a year-round mission to educate facility/project Owners and help them connect with peers and industry leaders. COAA is celebrating its 30th Anniversary with this landmark event, which will include four days of content and opportunities to connect.
COAA Connect attracts seasoned construction Owners, builders, design professionals, and other stakeholders. The event name underscores the fact that the conference is as much about peer-to-peer connections and networking as it is about the educational sessions.
Owners from a variety of sectors – higher ed, K-12, Federal/state/county/city government, healthcare, biotech/pharm, airports, and others – typically comprise more than 50% of the audience. In addition to a keynote address and educational sessions with relevant "take home" value for Owners, COAA Connect includes three evening receptions or activities, breakfast and lunch, one or more optional tours, and a chance to "do for others" through the organization's COAA Cares initiative.

Owner PM Workload Survey
Data You Can Use!
In response to requests from several Owner members, COAA conducted a survey of Owners in 2023 regarding project manager workload. The goal was to collect and share data so that Owners can benchmark their staff and workload against other Owners.
A total of 70 organizations participated in the survey, including several non-members. The majority of respondents were from the higher education, healthcare, and government sectors. COAA compiled the data, then shared with Dodge Data & Analytics to analyze the findings, present the results in graphical form, and draw conclusions.
The report – in the form of a PowerPoint presentation – was completed by Dodge and shared with all participants in early December, then reviewed in a live webinar with Dodge.
The findings are now available to all COAA members!
